Health IT is playing an increasing role in healthcare and can contribute to overload and interruptions. The U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory, Addressing Health Worker Burnout recommends Health IT companies can:

  • Work with health workers to design and improve EHRs
  • Co-design telehealth and virtual care services with health workers, patients, and families 
  • Ensure interoperability from the outset, strengthen integration of data across platforms and sectors, and standardize how health data is stored and exchanged.

Optimizing Strategies for Clinical Decision Support is a special publication from the National Academy of Medicine and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology that provides guidance for using clinical decision support (CDS) to transform care delivery and address barriers to its full implementation. The publication identifies the need for a continuously learning health system that generates, processes, and applies the best available evidence for clinical decision-making. It also recommends next steps to optimize strategies for adoption and use of clinical decision support.

A 10-Year Vision to Achieve an Interoperable Health IT Infrastructure by the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology outlines a three-year, six-year, and ten-year agenda to create a learning health system. It also explicates five building blocks for developing a nationwide interoperable health information infrastructure.
